Ingredients
  

For the Almond Bars
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup butter, room temperature Ensure butter is at room temperature for a light mixture.
  • 1 egg, room temperature
  • 1/2 teaspoon almond extract
  • 1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1 tablespoon milk For brushing on top of the bars.
  • 1/2 cup sliced almonds To be sprinkled on top.
For the Icing
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon almond extract
  • 1-2 tablespoons milk To achieve desired icing consistency.

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Preheat the oven to 325°F.
  2. In one bowl, sift together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
  3. In another bowl, cream together the softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  4. Add in the egg and almond extract, blending until smooth.
  5. Gradually mix the dry ingredients into the wet mixture until a dough forms.
  6. Press the dough into a greased 9x13 pan, brushing the top with milk and sprinkling with sliced almonds.
Baking
  1. Bake for 18-20 minutes until the edges are golden.
  2. Let cool for 5 minutes before drizzling with icing.
Icing
  1. Mix powdered sugar with milk to create icing consistency and drizzle over the bars.

Notes

Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week. For a richer flavor, swap half the almond extract for vanilla extract, or add chocolate chips or coconut flakes for variety.
