Ingredients

For the dumplings
  • 2 batches homemade pie dough
  • 6 medium apples (preferably Gala or Golden Delicious), peeled, cored, and seeded Choose apples that hold their shape during baking.
  • 1.5 tablespoons ground cinnamon
  • 0.5 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon salted butter, cut into 6 pieces
For the syrup
  • 2 cups water
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 0.25 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 3 tablespoons salted butter

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C). On a lightly floured worktop, roll out each pie dough into a rectangle roughly 1/8 inch thick.
  2. Divide each rectangle into three equal squares and chill in the refrigerator.
  3. In a small bowl, blend together the cinnamon and sugar. Lay an apple on the center of each dough square, sprinkle with cinnamon sugar, and add a butter pat.
  4. Fold the dough corners over the apple, dabbing edges with water to ensure they stick together.
  5. Place the dumplings in two 9x13 baking dishes.
Cooking
  1. In a saucepan, combine the water, sugar, cinnamon, and butter. Bring the mixture to a boil, then pour the syrup around the dumplings.
  2. Bake for 40-45 minutes until the apples are tender.
  3. Let cool slightly and drizzle with the warm syrup before serving.

Notes

For a delightful twist, serve with whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to three days. Warm them before serving.
