Ingredients

For the apple fries
  • 4 large tart/crisp apples (Granny Smith, Pink Lady, or Honeycrisp) Choose crisp apples for best results.
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour Can substitute with gluten-free flour for a gluten-free option.
  • 4 tablespoons granulated sugar, divided 1 tablespoon for batter, 3 tablespoons for topping.
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1.5 teaspoons cinnamon, divided 1 teaspoon for batter, 0.5 teaspoon for topping.
  • 0.25 cup vegetable oil (for frying)

Method

Preparation
  1. Peel, core, and slice the apples into ½-inch to ¾-inch thick slices.
  2. Place the apple slices in a bowl and pour the milk over them, tossing to coat.
  3. In a pie plate, combine the flour, cornstarch, 1 tablespoon of sugar, and 1 teaspoon of cinnamon.
  4. In a small bowl, mix the remaining 3 tablespoons of sugar with ½ teaspoon of cinnamon; set aside.
Cooking
  1. Remove 6 to 8 apple slices from the milk, letting excess drip off, then toss in the flour mixture to coat.
  2. Heat ¼ cup of vegetable oil in a skillet over medium heat and prepare a paper towel-lined baking sheet.
  3. Fry the apple slices in batches for 1 to 1½ minutes on each side until lightly golden.
  4. Transfer fried slices to the baking sheet and sprinkle with the cinnamon-sugar mixture.
  5. Repeat with remaining slices, adding oil as necessary.
Serving
  1. Serve warm, optionally drizzled with caramel sauce.

Notes

These apple fries shine when served fresh and warm. Add a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream for a delicious pairing. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator and reheat in the oven for crispiness.
