Ingredients

For the Cake
  • 1 box chocolate cake mix or 1 homemade chocolate cake
For the Whipped Cream
  • 1 cup heavy cream for whipping
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
For the Layers
  • 2 cups canned or fresh cherries pitted, with juice or syrup
  • 1/4 cup cherry juice from the canned cherries or fresh
  • 2 cups vanilla pudding store-bought or homemade
  • 1/2 cup dark chocolate shavings or grated chocolate
  • 1 tablespoon cocoa powder optional for garnish

Method

Preparation
  1. Prepare the Cake: If using a box mix, follow the instructions for making the chocolate cake. If you prefer to bake from scratch, allow the cake to cool, then slice it into chunks.
  2. Whip the Cream: In a bowl, combine heavy cream, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract. Whip until soft peaks form.
  3. Prepare the Cherries: If using canned cherries, drain them and save the juice. If using fresh cherries, pit and half them.
Assembly
  1. In a large glass bowl or individual cups, start layering the dessert. Begin with a layer of chocolate cake, drizzle with cherry juice, add a layer of vanilla pudding, and top with cherries. Then add whipped cream.
  2. Repeat these layers until you reach the top of the container. Finish with whipped cream and sprinkle dark chocolate shavings on top.
Chill and Serve
  1. Cover the trifle with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 2 hours to allow the flavors to meld.
  2. Serve the trifle in individual bowls or as a stunning dessert centerpiece.

Notes

Black Forest Trifle is best served chilled. You can scoop it out into individual bowls or use a large spoon to serve portions. Garnish with extra dark chocolate shavings or a sprinkle of cocoa powder for added flair. Store any leftovers in the refrigerator, covered with plastic wrap, best enjoyed within 2 to 3 days.
