Method
 

Preparation of the Blackberry Mixture
  1. In a spacious saucepan, combine blackberries, water, 1 cup sugar, 1/4 tsp salt, and lemon extract.
  2. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the flame to let it simmer for five minutes.
Preparation of the Dumpling Batter
  1. In a medium bowl, mix flour, 1 tablespoon sugar, baking powder, 1/4 tsp salt, nutmeg, and milk until just combined, leaving some lumps.
  2. Drop generous tablespoonfuls of batter into the simmering berry mixture.
  3. Cover the pot tightly and let it simmer for another 15 minutes.

Notes

For improved flavor, toss blackberries with cinnamon or balsamic vinegar before cooking. Avoid overmixing the batter for a delicate texture. Adjust sugar based on your preference.
