Ingredients

  • 1 Cup Water
  • 1 Cup Sugar
  • 1/2 tsp Salt
  • 1/2 tsp Lemon extract

  • 2 tsp Baking powder
  • 1 Tbsp Sugar
  • 1/4 tsp Salt
  • 1/4 tsp Nutmeg
  • 2/3 Cup Milk

Method

Preparation
  1. In a large, wide saucepan, combine the blackberries, water, sugar, salt, and lemon extract. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat and let it simmer for 5 minutes.
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, sugar, salt, and nutmeg. Gradually add the milk, stirring until the ingredients are just combined. The dough should be soft but not too sticky.
Cooking
  1. Drop tablespoon-sized portions of the dumpling dough into the simmering blackberry mixture. Ensure they are evenly spaced and not too crowded.
  2. Cover the saucepan tightly with a lid and let the dumplings simmer for 15 minutes. Do not lift the lid during this time.
Serving
  1. Serve the blackberry dumplings hot, straight from the saucepan, preferably with vanilla ice cream or fresh whipped cream.

Notes

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat gently on the stovetop or microwave. Consider variations like adding a cinnamon stick to the sauce or mixing in chopped peaches or apples.
