Cooking the Milk Mixture
- In a medium saucepan, gently warm the whole milk and flour over medium heat, whisking constantly until thickened, about 3 to 5 minutes.
- Remove from heat and let cool to room temperature.
Making the Frosting
- In a stand mixer with the paddle attachment, combine room-temperature butter, granulated sugar, and cocoa powder on low speed.
- Once combined, increase speed to medium and mix for 2 to 3 minutes until light and fluffy.
- Slowly add the cooled milk mixture to the bowl and beat together on medium-high for another 2 to 3 minutes until smooth.
- Switch to the whisk attachment and add vanilla extract, whisking on high for about 8 to 10 minutes until fluffy.
Notes
Store leftover frosting in an airtight container at room temperature for up to three days, or refrigerate for up to one week. Re-whip before use for best texture.
