Ingredients
  

Filling
  • 6 to 8 apples 6 to 8 apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp) Use a mix of apple varieties for depth of flavor.
  • 3/4 cup 3/4 cup sugar Increase if you like a sweeter pie.
  • 2 tablespoons 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour Helps thicken the filling.
  • 1 teaspoon 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon Add other spices like ginger or allspice for unique flavors.
  • 1/4 teaspoon 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 tablespoon 1 tablespoon lemon juice Brightens the flavor of the apples.
  • 1 tablespoon 1 tablespoon unsalted butter Dot on top of the filling before covering.
Crust
  • 1 package 1 package refrigerated pie crusts or homemade pie crust
Serving (optional)
  • Vanilla ice cream or caramel Great for serving alongside the pie.

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).
  2. Roll out the bottom pie crust and place it in a 9-inch pie dish.
  3. In a large bowl, combine peeled, sliced apples, sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice. Mix well.
  4. Pour the apple mixture into the pie crust and dot with small pieces of butter.
  5. Roll out the top pie crust and place it over the filling. Seal and crimp the edges. Cut slits for steam to escape.
Baking
  1. Bake in the preheated oven for 15 minutes.
  2. Reduce the temperature to 350°F (175°C) and continue baking for 35 to 45 minutes, until the apples are tender and the crust is golden brown.
Serving
  1. Let it cool before serving with vanilla ice cream or caramel, if desired.

Notes

To store, let it cool completely and then cover it tightly. Keeps in the refrigerator for up to 4 days, or can be frozen for up to 3 months. For a golden brown crust, brush the top with a bit of milk or egg wash before baking.
