Ingredients
  

Dough ingredients
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1 1/2 cups warm water
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
Boiling and topping ingredients
  • 1/4 cup baking soda
  • to taste coarse sea salt for sprinkling
  • as needed butter for brushing

Method
 

Preparation of Dough
  1. In a bowl, dissolve the yeast in warm water. Add sugar and let it sit for about 5 minutes until frothy.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine flour and salt. Gradually add the yeast mixture and knead until a soft dough forms.
  3. Cover and let the dough rest for 10 minutes.
Shaping and Boiling
  1. Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).
  2. Divide the dough into 8 equal pieces and shape each into a pretzel.
  3. Boil water in a large pot and add baking soda. Drop pretzels in the boiling water for about 30 seconds.
  4. Remove and place on a baking sheet. Brush with melted butter and sprinkle with coarse salt.
Baking
  1. Bake for about 12-15 minutes or until golden brown.
  2. Let cool slightly before serving.

Notes

Serve warm for the best experience. These pretzels go well with mustard, cheese sauce, or creamy dips. Store leftover pretzels in an airtight container for 1-2 days at room temperature or freeze wrapped in plastic wrap.
