  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour Slightly sticky dough preferred
Glaze ingredients

  • 3 tablespoons pure maple syrup
  • 1 teaspoon maple extract Optional; can substitute with more maple syrup
  • 1 tablespoon water To achieve desired glaze consistency
  • Vegetable oil for frying Vegetable oil 1 1/2 to 2 inches deep in fryer

Method

Dough preparation
  1. Microwave the milk and butter until melted (about 1 minute). If not fully melted, heat slightly longer.
  2. Pour the warm milk and butter mixture into a stand mixer bowl. Ensure temperature is between 100°F and 110°F.
  3. Add yeast and let it sit for about 10 minutes until bubbly.
  4. Add granulated sugar, salt, eggs, and vanilla extract. Mix briefly with the paddle attachment.
  5. Switch to the dough hook and add flour, mixing on low speed for about 5 minutes until dough is slightly sticky.
  6. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and let the dough rise until doubled, about 1 to 1.5 hours.
Shaping and frying
  1. Punch down the dough and roll it out on a floured surface into a 12x8-inch rectangle.
  2. Cut off rounded edges for a clean rectangle and slice the dough into twelve 4x2-inch bars.
  3. Cover the bars with a towel and let them rise for an additional 30 minutes.
  4. Heat vegetable oil in a deep fryer or skillet to 350°F.
  5. Fry bars one or two at a time for 1 to 2 minutes on each side until golden brown. Drain on paper towels.
Glazing
  1. In a medium bowl, mix powdered sugar, maple syrup, maple extract, and water until smooth.
  2. Dip the top of each fried bar into the glaze, or brush the glaze on. Allow to set for a few minutes.
