Ingredients
  

For the Crust
  • 1.5 cups all-purpose flour
  • 0.5 cups unsalted butter, softened Use cold butter for best results.
  • 0.25 cups granulated sugar For the crust.
For the Custard
  • 2 cups whole milk Warm gently.
  • 0.75 cups granulated sugar For the custard.
  • 4 large egg yolks Temper the yolks before adding.
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • Powdered sugar for dusting For serving.
  • Fresh fruit (optional) For garnish.

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 350F (175C). Grease an 8×8-inch baking dish.
  2. In a bowl, mix together the flour, softened butter, and 1/4 cup granulated sugar until crumbly.
  3. Press the mixture into the bottom of the prepared dish and bake for 15 minutes until lightly golden. Allow to cool completely.
  4. While the crust is cooling, warm the whole milk and 3/4 cup sugar in a saucepan over low heat.
Custard Preparation
  1. In a separate bowl, whisk the egg yolks until smooth.
  2. Temper the yolks by slowly whisking in a ladle of the warm milk mixture, then return everything to the saucepan.
  3. Continue cooking over low heat, whisking constantly, until the mixture thickens enough to coat the back of a spoon.
  4. Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract.
Assembly and Chilling
  1. Pour the custard over the cooled crust and smooth the top.
  2. Refrigerate until fully set, about 2 hours.
  3. Slice into squares and dust with powdered sugar. Garnish with fresh fruit if desired.

Notes

Serve chilled for the best texture. Use a knife dipped in hot water for clean cuts.
